Pulmonary Embolism

Pennsylvania Attorney Fighting Pulmonary Embolism Diagnosis Errors

A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot somewhere in the body (commonly in the legs) breaks loose and travels to the lungs. The clot blocks blood flow, and thus oxygen flow, either to or from the lungs. Symptoms of an embolism include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid pulse
  • Chest pain
  • Intense sweating
  • Anxiety

Since pulmonary embolisms are all-too common, and the symptoms may appear similar to other conditions, doctors must be well trained to identify and treat them. They develop quickly, and are often lethal. Brain damage and death could occur in as little as 30 minutes from the onset of symptoms. It is vitally important that medical providers recognize symptoms and quickly provide treatment. Unfortunately, many patients are misdiagnosed; they can suffer serious medical complications or even die.

If you have suffered from an undiagnosed pulmonary embolism or lost a loved one in this manner, contact Berger Law Firm, P.C., in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. We can help you through this difficult time and seek to recover the compensation you deserve.

Who Is At Risk for Pulmonary Embolism?

The chief cause of pulmonary embolism is deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a clot that forms in either the legs or the arms. If this clot becomes loose, it can travel through the blood stream, possibly blocking blood flow to the lungs or the heart (a cardiac embolism).

Deep vein thrombosis can result from:

  • Trauma at the clot site
  • Surgery
  • Extended periods of inactivity, including international air travel
  • Side effects of some medications
  • Certain cancer treatments
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy

Physicians Should Recognize Dangerous Pulmonary Embolisms

Because pulmonary embolisms are so common, doctors must be able to recognize the symptoms. They should immediately order blood tests, CT Scans or other exams to correctly diagnose the patient's condition.

Unfortunately, failure to properly diagnose pulmonary embolism is not unusual. Patients suffering from the condition are often untreated and discharged from the hospital, and fatal injuries often result.
